If you have recently purchased a horse, you may be in the process of buying supplies so that you can ride your new animal. Because you like the style, you may have decided that you wish to have a Western saddle.
While perusing the various saddles, you may believe that one is as good as another, especially if this is your first one. However, there are a couple of mistakes that you should avoid when choosing and buying your first Western saddle because they could make things uncomfortable for both you and your horse.
1. Avoid Choosing a Saddle Made from Lower-Quality Leather to Save Money
When looking at the different types of available saddles, you may decide that you would like to save a little money by choosing one made from lower-quality leather. Since it is still made from leather, you may think that it will still be durable enough to use while riding.
However, going with a saddle made from cheaper leather is a mistake. To understand why this is not a good idea, run your hand along the surface of both a high-quality and low-quality leather saddle.
You will find that the lower quality is rough, feeling almost like sandpaper. Because of this roughness, it will most likely chafe the insides of your legs through your jeans. And, even if you put a blanket underneath it, your horse may still feel some rubbing and discomfort from the saddle.
2. Avoid Neglecting to Sit on the Saddle Before Purchasing It
Another mistake that you should avoid before buying a Western saddle is neglecting to sit on it beforehand. Not only is the width and depth of each saddle different, but the position of the stirrups will vary depending on the saddle.
If you do not sit on the saddle, you may find that you have to sit awkwardly while riding it. Not only will this be uncomfortable for you, but your horse will feel your discomfort and have to compensate for the shifting of your weight as you try to sit up straight.
Choosing a low-quality leather for the saddle and neglecting to make sure that it fits will cause discomfort for both you and your horse and should be avoided. Especially if this is your first saddle purchase, seek assistance from a representative from a supply business that has Western saddles for sale so that they can help you pick out a saddle.
