Picking Out The Best Dog Collar For Your Canine: Things To Consider

Blog

Your best friend deserves a nice collar, and you can find a nice selection online. Check out a few of the things to consider before you start shopping.

Do you know your dog's proper neck measurements?

Getting your dog's neck measurements before buying a collar online ensures you end up with a good fit. A good rule of thumb is to use a flexible measuring tape to get the exact inches around the neck where the collar would be worn and then add on a few additional inches to obtain the proper size.

What type of buckle will work best for your dog?

Primarily, you will find buckles on dog collars made out of either plastic or metal. Metal buckles usually have the typical pin-buckle style with a pin that slips through a hole and an open buckle for threading the collar through. However, dual-sided clip buckles are common as well, and some collars have a swivel hook closure of some sort. All buckles have their advantages to consider. For example, the plastic dual-sided clip snaps in place and comes off quickly with a squeeze, and a pin-buckle gives you the ability to immediately adjust the tightness.

What features are most important to you and your dog?

Are you looking for something cute and designer like a braided navy and cream leather dog collar? Or, does your dog need something comfortable like a padded dog collar? How often does your dog wear a collar? Think about all of this before you pick out a certain collar for your canine. Keep in mind that designer collars can be super-cute, but it is best to pick a good high-quality model if the collar will be exposed to the weather.

Is your dog primarily indoors or out?

If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors, it is worth noting that some colors do work out better than others. For example, a neoprene collar is going to stand up to moisture exposure better than something like a leather collar. Likewise, if your dog spends more time than most on an outdoor leash, you may need a collar that is built tough enough to withstand pulling and jerking a little more.

Do you need special features in a dog collar?

Maybe you take your dog on walks after dark so you need reflective features or a light-up collar. Perhaps you need a collar designed primarily for training your puppy. Consider how the collar will be used and what purposes it will serve before you start shopping.
