4 Basic Pieces of Western Tack You Need for Casual Trail Riding

Blog

Anyone who has spent time around horses knows that there are endless amounts of tack you can buy. From custom, bedazzled headstalls to neon green saddle pads, the options are endless. But there's a huge difference between what you might want and what you really need. If your plans are to trail ride in western tack, then you really only need four basic pieces of tack. Read on to take a closer look.

A Saddle

Western saddles come in slightly different shapes and many different sizes. The most important characteristic of a saddle you'll use for trail riding, though, is that it fits both you and your horse. Most average-sized adults can ride in a 16" seat. If you're on the larger side, you might need a 17" seat.

If you have a quarter horse or another breed with a wider back, look for a saddle with quarter horse bars. This basically means the saddle tree is built wider. For thoroughbreds, Arabians, and other narrower breeds, look for a western saddle with semi-quarter horse bars, which are narrower. The lighter the saddle, the better. Why make your horse carry more weight than needed?

A Saddle Pad

For trail riding, a basic wool saddle cloth will do just fine. Wool breathes well and does not produce an environment that holds onto bacteria or fungi. Wool also doesn't slide. If your saddle is a little wide for your horse, you may instead want to look for a thicker pad made with fleece and canvas. Make sure it is long enough to cover the full length of your horse's back under the saddle you've chosen.

A Cinch

The cinch, or girth, holds the saddle in place. The cheapest western cinches are made from thick strings. There's nothing wrong with this design, but if your horse has sensitive skin, as many Arabians and thoroughbreds do, you may instead want to look for a neoprene girth. This material is soft to the touch and is easy to wipe clean after your ride.

A Bridle

A basic bridle made from leather is often the best choice. Leather is easier to clean than other materials like nylon. Bit choice is very personal. Some horses go better in a simple snaffle, while others prefer a ported bit. If you're just trail riding, you can probably just opt for a simple snaffle and only change if your horse seems resistant in some way. Leather split reins to match your bridle should do the trick.

Sure, you can also buy a breastplate, splint boots, panniers, and all sorts of other gear, but all of these items are optional. With just the four pieces of tack described above, you can at least get down the trail.
