Attaching Corals To Live Rock

Blog

Once you've set up your live rock, you might wonder what it takes to get your coral to attach to the new piece. Fragging and attaching corals is easy and fun once you get the hang of it. If you are setting up a new saltwater aquarium, and you want to beautify it with lots of interesting corals, then here are some tips to get you started.

Cure the Live Rock

When you first get your live rock, chances are there is decaying life in there. Curing means that you are allowing for that life to decay before placing the rock in your tank. Curing is extremely important if you are putting your rock in an established tank. If you don't cure your rock, then you could spike ammonia levels in your tank and harm any existing animals.

Plan Your Design

Once you have your live rock cured and established, then plan how you want your aquarium and live rock to look. Determine what type of coral you want and where they would look best. Planning first saves time and puts less stress on your corals in the long run.

Frag Your Coral

If you have your own coral, then you may want to try fragging them yourself. Fragging for the first time is nerve-wracking, but most people can do it with no problem. Fragging involves breaking off a piece from a larger coral, placing it on a surface or coral plug, and then moving the fragment to another location.

Fragging is basically cloning, not breeding. There are all kinds of articles and advice on fragging online. You can also ask a reef shop for advice if you are not sure. If you don't want to frag your own coral, then you can purchase fragments already attached to plugs.

Attach Your Coral

Attaching your coral is fairly easy. If your rock has any cracks or wedges, sometimes you can wedge the coral into them. However, many people use commercially-made superglue. If you do this, make sure you use glues that contain cyanoacrylate. However, if the thought of using superglue concerns you, then use one of the many types of aquarium-safe reef glues and epoxies available on the market.

Whether you are setting up your first saltwater aquarium, or you've had saltwater aquariums for a while, setting up a new tank is exciting. Of course, with any reef aquarium, you must have live rock. You can easily find live rock for sale from a reputable reef aquarium shop. You may even find some that have been pre-cured for you.
